Grown-ups and children alike are in for a treat over the upcoming summer holidays as the RSPB will once again be encouraging families across the UK to spend a night outdoors as part of its Big Wild Sleepout event.
Thousands of children and their families will be pitching their tents and rolling out their sleeping bags to get closer to nature and discover which night time creatures they have on their own doorstep by sleeping out in their gardens or outdoor spaces.
When you’re tucked up in bed, night time provides an exciting wild world to explore. From bats, moths and minibeasts to marvellous mammals – the natural world comes alive as nocturnal creatures go on a night time adventure.

The event takes place over the last weekend in July. It’s a simple, free, fun activity for people of all ages to take part in.
Caroline Offord, RSPB spokesperson said: “We’re calling on families across the UK to go on a nocturnal adventure – get together, get wild and discover the amazing night life on their own doorstep.
“Whether you’re a seasoned camper, occasional glamper or just fancy an evening exploring your wild space before returning to your home comforts, there’s something for everyone. We’ve got loads of ideas and resources to help you create your very own wild night. And by taking part in the Big Wild Sleepout, you’ll be taking more steps towards your Wild Challenge, the RSPB’s new, free, year-round nature adventure for families.”
The Wild Challenge is the RSPB new online awards scheme encouraging families to go out and get closer to the natural world. By completing activities ranging from minibeast safaris and habitat exploring to making a compost heap and planting for wildlife, participants can log their achievements on to the RSPB Wild Challenge website and collect bronze, silver and gold awards.
The RSPB is also organising sleepout events across the UK for those who don’t have a garden or who want a wilder time in some truly inspiring locations! With special night time activities from food and stories around the camp fire to a night time stroll, this is the ultimate summer sleepout experience.
